Alexander was the son of King Philip II of Macedonia and Queen Olympias of Epirus. He was born in 356 BC in Pella, the capital of Macedonia. He had a sister named Cleopatra and a half-brother named Philip III.

Alexander was a curious, intelligent and brave child. He loved reading, learning and adventure. He was interested in philosophy, history, mythology and literature. He dreamed of becoming a hero like the heroes of the Iliad and the Odyssey, the famous poems of Homer.
